Seoul: Impeached South Korean President Yoon Seok-youl was released from prison this morning after the court approved his request to annul his detention, which stemmed from his brief imposition of martial law.
Last month, the impeached president submitted a request to Seoul Central District Court, claiming that the indictment issued against him regarding the declaration of martial law on December 3 was "illegal."
According to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency, Yoon was released from prison on Friday based on a court order that supported his lawyer's request to cancel the arrest warrant.

Yoon's defense team had filed a complaint against his continued detention, asserting that prosecutors had charged him one day after the arrest warrant, under which he was detained in December, expired, following his failed attempt to impose martial law.
Yoon was separately impeached by lawmakers in December, leaving it to the Constitutional Court to decide whether to formally end his presidency or reinstate him to office.
If the Constitutional Court upholds Yoon's impeachment, he will be removed from office, and a national election will be held to choose his successor within two months.
