The Vatican said Pope Francis had another restful night in hospital and woke up shortly after 8 a.m. on Friday as he hits the three-week mark in his hospitalization.
The 88-year-old pontiff is being treated for bilateral pneumonia at Rome's Gemelli Hospital, which he entered on February 14.
He had shared an audio message on Thursday evening to thank people for their prayers, giving the world a tangible indication of just how frail he is in the recording of his voice.
"I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers for my health from the square, I accompany you from here," the pope said-shakily, with labored breathing, and in his native Spanish-in the message.
"May God bless you and the Virgin protect you. Thank you."
It was recorded from his hospital room and played in St. Peter's Square during the nightly recitation of the Rosary.
This is a developing story and more information will be added shortly.
