Mikel Arteta handed Arsenal summer transfer update after'total verbal agreement'

Mikel Arteta and Arsenal continue to be linked with a number of potential transfer targets ahead of the Premier League run in. The Gunners are 13 points adrift of Liverpool at the top of the table and know their best chance of silverware this season is likely winning the Champions League.

That'll be no mean feat for the Gunners, with plenty of strong opponents still in the draw. However, they do have one foot in the next round of the competition after thrashing PSV Eindhoven 7-1 away from home in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie.

Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid await the winner in the next round with Los Blancos boasting a slender lead. Winning Europe's elite competition would be a major feather in Arteta's cap and be a glamourous achievement to lure in any new signings this summer.

Aside from the obvious striker hunt, the Gunners also need to bolster a number of positions elsewhere. The midfield engine room is arguably the most pressing position after the forward chase.

Both Jorginho and Thomas Partey are out of contract at the Emirates this summer and Arteta's side had been linked with a sensational swoop for Bayern Munich's versatile midfielder Joshua Kimmich.

The Germany international was set to be available on a free transfer this summer with his contract at the Bundesliga giants expiring. Arsenal have long been admirers of the 30-year-old, but recent reports claim he's now agreed a new deal with Bayern.

Sky Germany Journalist Florian Plettenberg claims Kimmich has turned down an approach from PSG in order to stay with Bayern, with a new contract agreed until the summer of 2029.

Plettenberg tweeted: "Total verbal agreement between FC Bayern and Joshua Kimmich on a new contract until 2029! Green light from the entire Bayern board. Final paperwork is in progress.

"Contracts are set to be signed this week, with the announcement planned soon. Kimmich will extend his contract following today’s new discussions.

"The 30-year-old leader considered an offer from PSG, but his main focus was always on extending his contract."
