Marshall: Alejandro Garnacho might have to get used to new Manchester United role after £25m…

Alejandro Garnacho's best moment for Manchester United against Real Sociedad came on that familiar inside-left channel, picking up possession on that side of the pitch in the first half, driving forward, cutting inside and forcing Alex Remiro into a save.

But that moment was unusual because [Garnacho](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/alejandro-garnacho) spent almost the entirety of his time on the pitch operating as the right-sided No.10, with Joshua Zirkzee to the left. It was a change in approach from what we've seen and one that left plenty of people baffled.

Garnacho has clearly shown he is better on the left than the right in his [United](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/manchester-united-fc) career. He looked more comfortable running with the ball in that one attack than he did when he picked up possession on the other side, although he did create Zirkzee's goal from there.

The 20-year-old has influenced games from the left recently. However, the decision to switch him to the right might show the tactical straitjacket he still has to get used to under Ruben Amorim, who again gently rebuked Garnacho after the game.

So many of those promising performances have come on the left when he has drifted wide and played more like a natural winger, notably in second-half cameos against FCSB and Leicester City when coming on at half-time. He has added pace to those performances, but Amorim wants his 10s to be more central.

With £25million January arrival Patrick Dorgu now switched out to the left, he is showing his qualities as a wing-back by attacking high and wide down that flank. He needs an attacking midfielder who will stay infield, leaving space for him to run into and giving the option to combine with as well.

If Garnacho is on the left, he is more likely to drift into areas that Dorgu wants to play in, which would be problematic. They could be two of United's best attacking outlets, but not if they are in the same areas of the pitch.

Amorim started Dorgu on the right for his United debut, but the left-footer has been on the left since then. When he plays on that flank, it's unlikely you will see Garnacho on that side as well.

With Dorgu still suspended domestically, it will be interesting to see if Amorim moves Garnacho back to the left against Arsenal this weekend, presuming he starts. If right-footer Diogo Dalot is back as left wing-back, then he is unlikely to attack in quite the same way as Dorgu.

Amorim lacks options at the moment, but Garnacho could drop out if Christian Eriksen is brought into the side. It was again telling that he was the first player replaced on Thursday night when he remains such a major threat in an attack struggling for goals.

The head coach highlighted his defensive work as a concern when explaining that substitution and it did hint again at the sense that Amorim and Garnacho are yet to really find the same wavelength at Old Trafford.

"I felt he (Garnacho) was tired," Amorim explained, "and you see it because we did a lot of transitions in the second half because sometimes he was late to defend. And sometimes he’s in a good position to transition but I felt he was tired to recover and do the same things. I look at the game as a whole and not just in transitions."

Garnacho has now gone 22 games without a goal for United, but he has had 38 shots in his 12 appearances. He could be vital to breaking an excellent Arsenal defence down on Sunday, but he may also have to get used to playing more from the right than the left this season.
