Man Utd told Ruben Amorim is 'drowning' but it's too soon to sack him

Jamie Carragher has harshly criticised Ruben Amorim's tenure at Manchester United, declaring that the manager seems to be "drowning" after taking over from Erik ten Hag. The Red Devils have endured some dismal form under Amorim's leadership, seizing a mere 11 victories from 25 matches in all competitions, with their latest endeavour being a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad.

Should they stumble in the second leg, their campaign would essentially come to a premature end, having already been ousted from the domestic cups while also struggling in the lower reaches of the Premier League standings. Carragher didn't mince words about the team's performance but suggested that United had every reason to expect better results from Amorim.

In a column for The Telegraph, the former Liverpool defender opined: "This is the worst United team of my lifetime and the bare minimum that could have been expected after Amorim took charge, that the team would look like they are being coached better than they were under Ten Hag, has not materialised.

"It is no shock United were beaten by Fulham in the FA Cup last weekend. United are deficient in every area of the pitch, 14th in the Premier League and looking over their shoulder at Everton and West Ham rather than outperforming anyone above them.

"United's players have not responded well to his methods. Has a single player looked any better than they were under Ten Hag? In fairness, most of the United players have surrendered any right to express disapproval about any manager given how poor they have been for so long."

"United should be heading into next season amid a buzz of excitement about what their new coach might do after a pre-season of physical and tactical conditioning. Instead, there will be trepidation and fear of another slog of a campaign."

Carragher has been critical of Amorim's performance at Old Trafford as he grapples with the club's demands, but he doesn't think it's time to sack him just yet.

"This is not an endorsement of United immediately reviewing Amorim’s position before the start of next season. Far from it. United made the decision to bring him in mid-season despite the coach’s reservations as he would have preferred a pre-season and the chance to bring at least two or three new recruits with him," he said.

"But Ratcliffe and United’s fans are entitled to have expected so much more. It is sink or swim at one of the biggest clubs in the world, and Amorim is currently drowning in the tidal waves of mediocrity."
