Arsenal legend Robert Pires has praised Bukayo Saka ’s exceptional talent, declaring the 23-year-old as “one of the best players in Europe” despite his recent injury setback.

A key figure in Mikel Arteta’s squad, Saka had been in scintillating form at the start of the season, registering five goals and ten assists in his first 16 Premier League appearances. However, the England international has been sidelined since late last year with a serious hamstring injury, missing Arsenal’s last 16 games in all competitions.

Saka’s absence has been deeply felt, particularly with fellow attacking stars Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, and Gabriel Jesus also unavailable. Despite promising performances from youngster Ethan Nwaneri as a stand-in, Arsenal’s attacking struggles have contributed to their stuttering title challenge.

“Bukayo Saka is one of the best players in Europe in his position,” Pires toldThe Athletic.

“He has that ability to always get past his opponent. As soon as he receives the ball, if he sees that there’s space behind the defender, he goes for it.

“I also think he’s progressed a huge amount in his off-the-ball work. He always offers a passing option when a teammate has possession.”

When discussing other elite wingers, Pires also highlighted Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, praising his positional awareness and ability to capitalise on defensive mistakes.

“This season, Mo Salah has progressed a huge amount in terms of always being in the right position,” Pires added.

“With the experience he has, he senses things. He’s always well-positioned, and he’s very good at anticipating defensive mistakes. He’s never surprised when the ball comes to him—he’s always ready. As we say here in France, he is irresistible!”

Saka is expected to return to training after the international break.
