Only 12 of the 20 biggest stadiums in England are currently used in the Premier League; there are some big names in the English Football League with some historic stadiums. Here are the ten biggest club football stadiums in England outside of the Premier League.
The Ten Biggest Club Football Stadiums in England Outside of the Premier League
10. Britannia / bet365 Stadium
Stoke City’s Britannia Stadium comes in at tenth with a capacity of 30,089. Currently sitting 20th in the Championship, the Potters won’t be seen in the Premier League next season, but their stadium was recently a familiar sight in the top flight, as they spent nine consecutive seasons there from 2008/09 to 2017/18.
9. Stadium:MK
Amongst most EFL fans, the Stadium:MK is a controversial ground after MK Dons’ split from AFC Wimbledon in 2004. Despite boasting a capacity of 30,500, it tends to draw capacities of under 10,000, partly due to them spending the last eight seasons in League One and League Two. However, they have never had an average attendance of above 15,000. Currently sitting 18th in England’s fourth-tier, we won’t see this stadium in the Premier League anytime soon.

8. Ewood Park
Ewood Park is the only stadium on this list to be home to a Premier League winner. Blackburn Rovers lifted the trophy in 1995, with Alan Shearer the main man scoring an incredible 34 goals (albeit in a 46 game season).
With 31,367 seats, and supported with portable power station, it can be a fortress at times, and could help inspire the team to promotion back to the top flight this season, with Blackburn just a point off play-offs at current.
7. The Coventry Building Society Arena
Coventry have a strong history, but recently have struggled to fill their large stadium (32.609). They had an average attendance of 19,000 in 2021/22 and 2022/23, though this did increase to 25,000 during last season’s success. Sitting a point above the previous team mentioned, they are another contender for play-offs and promotion this year.

6. Bramall Lane
Home to Sheffield United, Bramall Lane has a capacity of 32,702, and is one of many impressive grounds in Yorkshire. It is believed to be the oldest stadium in the world to still be hosting professional matches, though did undergo expansions in 2001 and 2006.
5. Pride Park
Pride Park has not been used in the Premier League since 2008, when Derby County set a record points low of 11, though Southampton fans may be worried about getting close to that this year. The ground has an impressive 33,597 seats, though could be used in League One by August.

4. The Riverside Stadium
Another Northern Stadium, the Riverside has a capacity of 33,746 and is home to Middlesbrough Football Club. As football grounds go, at 30 years old (opened in 1995), it’s a relatively new one that is much more modern than its predecessor, Ayresome Park.
3. Elland Road
The first spot in the top three goes to Leeds United‘s Elland Road, a notoriously loud and difficult away fixture for opponents. The first seven stadiums on this list had capacities within around 3000 of each other, but Elland Road is 4000 clear of fourth place, with 37,890 fans. A staple of English football, it has been Leeds’ home since their formation, and was previously used by a rugby club.

2. Hillsborough
The third Yorkshire stadium on this list, and the second one in the City of Sheffield, Hillsborough is home to Sheffield Wednesday and has 39,723 seats. Opening in 1899, it has been home to plenty of success for the Owls: four Division One titles, two FA Cups, and one Football League Cup.
1. The Stadium of Light
The biggest stadium on this list by far, with arguably the most iconic name, is the Stadium of Light, of Sunderland Football Club. It boasts a huge capacity of 48,707, which is only bettered by seven Premier League clubs. With stars like Jobe Bellingham, Enzo Le Fee, and Wilson Isidor playing there this season, this is another ground that could potentially be used in the Premier League next campaign.
