Mason Greenwood is set to switch allegiance to Jamaica
Mason Greenwood is set to be reunited with his former Manchester United coach Steve McClaren should his international switch go through.
The striker, who is currently plying his trade for Marseille, has just one cap for England. That appearance came back in 2020 but Greenwood will no longer be part of the Three Lions set-up.
FA CEO Mark Bullingham has revealed that the process for him to switch allegiance to Jamaica is well underway. He said: “That's happened formally, so he wouldn't be able to (play for England) because you can only switch once.
"We actually didn't have that communication. I know people asked Gareth [Southgate] about him, and Gareth was upfront in that he hadn't been in his thinking, because he hadn't been performing at that level, so I'm not aware of any communication we had with him.

"I don't think there was ever a request or anything like that. It just wasn't one we got to, so it's a personal decision by him."
Once the switch is made official, it would see Greenwood playing once again under McClaren, who has been Jamaica boss since last summer. McClaren previously had a second spell at Old Trafford as part of Erik ten Hag ’s coaching team.
"I’ve heard a lot of publicity about and always around Mason Greenwood,” McClaren said in November about the prospect of Greenwood switching allegiance. “I am constantly in touch with Mason, the message is always the same, ‘when the time is right'.
"You’ve got to think he’s had a traumatic time the last two years in his contract, and he’s been on loan. He’s been here, he’s been there – the publicity, and I think he just wants to settle in at Marseille and enjoy his football, which he’s doing, and he wants to join the Reggae Boyz. I know that, every time I speak to him, I’ve no reason to doubt that, and the process goes on."

And he suggested that he was keen for a switch to be completed by the March international break. He added: “I didn’t expect it to be, once you missed the first camp, any of these camps, but I’m hoping by March time we will have made progress on everything.
"As I said, our whole project and process is about World Cup qualification, and that’s still, I know, on the horizon, but it’s still something that we’re thinking about now and planning for in the long term. So Mason, we keep an eye on and keep you posted on that.”
Jamaica are in action later this month as they attempt to qualify for the Gold Cup. They take on Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in a two-legged affair.
