Inari Medical has launched the Artix thrombectomy system, a medical device engineered specifically for certain requirements of the peripheral arterial system.

The system is claimed to be a combination of “aspiration” and mechanical thrombectomy solution designed for arterial thrombectomy.

An arterial blood clot in the leg is stated to be a critical condition that poses severe risks to life and limb, necessitating prompt medical intervention.

The Artix system is Inari Medical’s first venture into the arterial segment and is built upon the “success” of the company’s venous thrombectomy devices.

The company stated that it provides a “comprehensive toolkit” approach to arterial thrombectomy, with an “over-the-wire” system that allows physicians the flexibility for either aspirating or mechanically extracting the clot.

Norwalk Hospital Vascular chief Jonathan Bowman performed the initial commercial case with the system last October.

Inari Medical chief medical officer Tom Tu said: “There is a real clinical need to address chronic thrombi and decrease the risk of clot migration. Artix will raise the bar of effective arterial thrombectomy.

“We are excited to bring Inari’s core competency in thrombectomy to the arterial space with the goal of improving outcomes.”

The system has an aspiration**–**capable**,** 8Fr low profile, trackable, kink-resistant sheath in two lengths—65cm and 90cm, which facilitates complex and distal interventions, stated the company.

Additionally, the over-the-wire mechanical element is specifically tailored for collecting and retrieving the clot of acute to chronic nature.

A covered nitinol mesh funnel of the system also offers temporary flow restrictions to reduce the arterial clot migration risk during procedures.

Last month, Stryker [completed the acquisition](https://www.medicaldevice-network.com/news/stryker-inari-4-9bn/) of Inari Medical for a total equity value of approximately $4.9bn. This acquisition marks an expansion for Stryker into the venous thromboembolism market.
