King's Undergraduate Research Fellows celebrated in Parliament

07 March 2025

King's Undergraduate Research Fellowships (KURF) students represented King's at the prestigious Poster in Parliament conference in Westminster.

On 5 March 2025, King's undergraduate research was showcased as part of the Posters in Parliament exhibition in Portcullis House on the Parliamentary estate.

Posters in Parliament enables institutions to send up to two student researchers to present their research posters to MPs and policymakers based in Westminster. Institutions are given the opportunity to invite their local MPs and other guests.

This year, two King's students - Andreea Barbinta (Neuroscience) and Lissan Koirala (Physics) - were selected to represent their posters and research which was undertaken as part of the **King's Undergraduate Research Fellowship** (KURF) in 2024.

Each year King's academics across all faculties pitch exciting and innovative summer research projects to King's undergraduate students to participate in. Participating students have the opportunity to work directly on cutting-edge research across King's and are paid a stipend throughout the opportunity.

Students were joined in Parliament by the academic supervisors for their projects, Dr Martim Brandão, Lecturer in Robotics and Autonomous Systems in the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences and Dr Gavin Stewart, British Academy Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience.

> Having the chance to talk about my KURF project in the Parliament was inspiring and a great motivator to keep on this research path. The meaningful chats I had with people from very diverse backgrounds about different aspects of my research interest have made me consider ideas I haven’t thought before.

Over many years, Posters in Parliament has provided opportunity for undergraduate students, representing universities across the UK, to exhibit their research in Westminster and showcase first-hand some of the innovative research taking place around the country to Members of Parliament and other policy makers, academics and university leaders.

The exhibition is inspired by the US Posters on the Hill event, where students are sent by their universities to present their work to the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The event is part of the British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR), an open coalition of universities dedicated to encouraging a national culture of undergraduate research.

> It’s fantastic to see such a strong representation from King’s at Posters in Parliament. KURF provides students with invaluable opportunities to develop interdisciplinary research skills, gain technical expertise, and build transferable abilities that set them apart. The King’s Edge team has been working hard to enhance the scheme, and it’s great to see its impact—shaping the way students engage with research and develop skills that stay with them far beyond King’s
