Breaking: Commanders Set to Release Pro Bowl Veteran

According to published reports, the Washington Commanders are releasing veteran defensive tackle Jonathan Allen on Friday as they have been unable to work out a package to trade him.

He is free to sign with a new team immediately as he is a street free agent. League-wide free agency commences on Monday.

The two-time Pro Bowl player will be a highly sought after interior defensive lineman. Over his eight-year career, Allen has made 108 starts.

He has made 401 combined tackles during his illustrious career. He has also accumulated 60 tackles for loss and 42.0 career sacks, including three in 2024 where the Commanders went to the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Commanders will clear an additional $16.5 million in salary cap relief by terminating the 30-year old Allen.

Washington gave Allen the green light weeks ago to see if he could find a willing trade partner, but none could be found. Accordingly, he was given his walking papers on Friday,

Allen was a former first-round pick by the Commanders in 2017 out of Alabama. He has accounted for 401 tackles and 42 sacks throughout his career.

There are reports out of Pittsburgh the Steelers might be interested in signing the former Crimson Tide star as he has ties to the coaching staff. Allen was coached in college by Karl Dunbar, who was his position coach at Alabama when they won a national championship in 2016.
