Kobbie Mainoo will be in high demand if he leaves Manchester United

Manchester United starlet Kobbie Mainoo is ready to turn down a new contract offer and leave the Premier League altogether, it has been claimed.

Mainoo, 19, made his United debut under Erik ten Hag in January 2023 under Erik ten Hag. His form under the Dutch boss earned him his first senior England caps, and he was part of Gareth Southgate's squad for Euro 2024, while he has continued to play a part at club level under Ruben Amorim.

The teenager's Old Trafford contract is due to expire in 2027, with the club holding an option for another 12 months. However, with United set to miss out on Champions League football for the second season in a row - unless they can win the Europa League - he appears ready to fly the nest.

United themselves remain keen to tie the academy product down to a new deal amid interest from the likes of Chelsea. He's currently one of the club's lower earners, but appears ready to try his luck overseas.

According to The Guardian, no agreement has been reached despite 'protracted' negotiations between Mainoo's representatives and United. The youngster, who was born in nearby Stockport, is not said to have any desire to leave United for another Premier League club.

United's financial situation saw them open the door to any and every member of their squad leaving in January, though the highest-profile exits were loans. Mainoo, who is currently injured, is reported to be valued at around £70m by United, and the amount of time left on his deal may allow them to hold out for their asking price.

If he does end up moving to another European league, he would be following in the footsteps of a number of his England team-mates. Harry Kane joined Bayern Munich in 2023, while Jude Bellingham has starred for Real Madrid and former United starlet Angel Gomes has thrived at Lille.

Mainoo has mostly been used as a central midfielder for United, but the arrival of Ruben Amorim and a switch to a 3-4-3 set-up has prompted change. The youngster played as a number 10 against FCSB in the Europa League in January, where a goal and an assist prompted United's head coach to suggest he could have a long-term future further forward.

"Now more as a 10, you can feel that he was so free, playing the ball near the box is really good, the small connections," Amorim said after that win in Romania. "We need time to work with the players and understand the best positions for them.

"Kobbie Mainoo played in a different position, with more freedom, more near the box. He’s so technical, he can change the game there. So, I think it’s a good position for him, we will see. But I’m happy to see Kobbie enjoy the game more."
