Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo could be destined to leave Old Trafford this summer, as contract discussions continue.

The midfielder is looking for a more competitive wage given his increased status in the squad and the England national team, despite still being on only £20,000 a week.

Mainoo was one of the goalscorers in the FA Cup final last season which secured a spot for United in the Europa League as well as clinching the cup.

Now, with Ruben Amorim at the reigns, Mainoo has also become a regular for the Portuguese manager, before being ruled out with a muscular injury.

However, Amorim has been testing the youngster as more of an attacking player, taking him out of the defensive midfield role that Erik ten Hag had assigned him.

Speaking of the change in position, Amorim commented: “He was struggling a lot defending, as a midfielder, now more as a No 10 you can feel he’s playing on the ball nearer the box and near the box is really good with his small connections.”

He continued by saying that time is needed to find everyone’s best positions, claiming that Mainoo has “so much potential to grow up even more”.

However, this time could be called short, with The Guardian commenting that Mainoo is minded to reject the contract with United.

Kobbie Mainoo to reject Manchester United contract

Kobbie Mainoo’s representatives are wanting at least £180,000 per week for the star, which United are refusing to agree to.

As such, Premier League rivals Chelsea are keeping a close eye on the situation for a potential move, however United are looking to avoid selling a star player to their league rivals.

That said, with Mainoo being a product of the United academy and therefore pure profit, his sale of around £70 million would be a massive help to easing the financial pressures at the club.

With United still having high regard for the youngster, it’s unlikely they’ll authorise his sale to another Premier league club, with Mainoo contracted to The Red Devils until 2027.

As such, Mainoo could be more likely to move to the continent with one of Europe’s elite clubs, however none have been named as of yet as monitoring his situation.

However, the continued talks haven’t dissuaded United, as The Red Devils still believe that they can agree terms to see the 19-year-old remain at Old Trafford.
