Barcelona captain wants to stay after receiving fresh contract offer influenced by Flick

As reported earlier in the week, FC Barcelona have taken a step forward to tie down the future of midfielder and captain Frenkie de Jong.

The Netherlands international’s current contract stands to expire in 2026 but talks over a new deal had been shelved for a while now.

However, De Jong has once again become a key member of the team under Hansi Flick after going through some struggles after his return from a long-term injury.

His growing influence in the team and improved performances have prompted Barcelona director Deco to present a three-year extension offer until 2029 but without an increase in his current €18-19 million salary and no previous deferred payments.

Flick’s influence key behind renewal offer

Now, according to journalist Ferran Correas on Catalunya Radio, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick’s influence has been key behind the renewal offer that has been presented to Frenkie de Jong.

Despite having used the Dutchman rather sparingly upon his return from injury, the Barça head coach has always trusted the midfielder and is showing it by restoring him as a regular in the starting lineup in recent weeks.

Indeed, De Jong has overtaken Marc Casado in the pecking order and is once again a key player in the team.

Flick, as such, has been pushing for his contract extension and it seemingly has influenced the Blaugrana to send a new contract offer.

De Jong fully trusts Flick

The report further states that De Jong, who had some misgivings about his situation in the past, is now keen on staying put at Barcelona.

It is claimed that the former AFC Ajax ace fully trusts the German tactician and as such now seems to be willing to continue his stint at the club.
