Should Arsenal and Liverpool offer€22m for this Dutch midfielder or will it be a gamble?

Arsenal and Liverpool have both expressed interest in Frenkie de Jong, but they may ultimately miss out on the Barcelona midfielder.

With his contract set to expire in 2026, the two Premier League giants have been closely monitoring the Dutchman’s situation at Camp Nou. Up until now, most experts believed that Barcelona would look to cash in on him during the summer transfer window.

However, in a surprising turn of events, SPORT reports that the Blaugrana have offered De Jong a contract extension. The proposed deal is said to be for three years, with an annual salary of €19 million—the same amount he currently earns.

Will Frenkie de Jong Accept Barcelona’s New Offer?

Since joining Barcelona in 2019, De Jong has made 241 appearances for the club but despite his experience and talent, he has fallen down the pecking order this season. Under Hansi Flick, the midfielder has started just four LaLiga games, despite being fully fit and available for selection.

It’s evident that De Jong is not a key figure in Flick’s plans, and this contract offer is likely an attempt to secure a higher transfer fee rather from the potential suitors. The terms of the extension clearly showcase Barcelona’s lack of enthusiasm, as they are only offering a three-year deal with no salary increase to someone who is just 27 years old.

Frenkie De Jong is passionate about Barcelona and in the past he has rejected multiple offers to remain at the club. He would ideally wish to stay, but it’s unlikely he will sign the new deal unless the club improves its terms and offers him a salary hike. If Barca refuse to make a better offer, the Dutchman will most certainly push for an exit this summer.

Should Arsenal or Liverpool Match or Improve the Offer?

Arsenal and Liverpool have the financial capacity to tempt Frenkie De Jong with a more lucrative contract and we think offering him a salary in the range of €22-23 million per year could be enough to lure him to the Premier League.

Liverpool might be hesitant to make such a big financial commitment, given they already have Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch in their squad. Arsenal, on the other hand, could be more willing to make a move with Thomas Partey and Jorginho expected to depart at the end of the season. The Gunners will be in need of midfield reinforcements and if they fail to land Martin Zubimendi, Frenkie De Jong could be a perfect alternative.

Despite limited playing time this season, De Jong remains one of Europe’s top central midfielders. Last season, he featured in 30 games for Barcelona, despite being sidelined for five months with an ankle injury and his talent and experience would significantly enhance any midfield, making him a world-class addition to either Arsenal or Liverpool.
