Minnesota Vikings' Pro Bowl cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. is set to hit the open market. Murphy, who became a star with the Vikings after coming over from the Arizona Cardinals, could be the highest-paid cornerback on the free agency market.
With inside-out versatility, he will be a coveted player. The Vikings would still like to re-sign him, but Murphy will see his options on the open market and how much money he will command.
The Steelers are expected to be active in the free-agent cornerback market, and someone like Murphy makes a lot of sense for them right out of the gate. In addition, the team showed interest in him as a prospect coming out of Washington.
Murphy came to Pittsburgh for a pre-draft visit in 2019, a sharp indicator of past interest in the Steelers regarding free-agent moves.
In 2024, Murphy had six interceptions while playing in all 17 games. That was a career-high, but he has been known for his ball production. Murphy has 14 intercpetions in his career, and if 2024 is any indication, his play will only continue to improve.
Murphy joins a star-studded group of free agent cornerbacks like Charvarius Ward, D.J. Reed, Carlton Davis, Asante Samuel Jr., and others that could make a lot of sense for the Steelers to pursue in free agency.
