DK Metcalf throws shade at Geno Smith as Seahawks pursue trade

Maybe Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf was insulted this offseason by the team talking so much about how they wanted quarterback Geno Smith to be the long-term answer at the position. Not that Metcalf plays quarterback, of course, but he and Smith both have contracts that are up after 2025. The focus seemed to be on Smith and not Metcalf as far as extension talks.

Or maybe Metcalf knows something the rest of Seahawks-dom does not know. After all, Smith has not yet signed an extension, and at this point, he is set for free agency after the 2025 season.

That likely will not come to fruition. Smith will almost certainly sign an extension, and that could come quite soon. General manager John Schneider said last week at the NFL Combine that the team was meeting with Smith's agents in hopes of getting a new deal done. Metcalf might not be so sure.

DK Metcalf appears to throw shade at Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith

Or maybe he simply does not like playing with Smith. To be fair, while Smith did throw 15 interceptions this past season, at least three of them could be blamed on Metcalf. His poor route-running (he fails to cut his routes sharply and often rounds them out) led directly to Smith throwing picks on three crossing patterns. The defender was able to undercut Metcalf because of the receiver's lack of preciseness.

This is all brought up because, according to what Dianna Russini of The Athletic said on the GoJo and Golic show, one of the reasons Metcalf wants to be traded is that he wants to go to a team with a "more stable quarterback situation."

There is little doubt that the Seahawks do, in fact, have a stable quarterback situation. Smith has been QB1 in Seattle for three seasons. Assuming the team and quarterback work out the assumed extension, he could be Seattle's quarterback for the next three years. That would be six seasons total. How many teams can say they have the same starter at QB for that long?

Metcalf's actually seems as if he is throwing unnecessary shade at Geno Smith. Smith has not only been the recent starter, but he has been a good one. He has led the league in completion percentage once, been a Pro Bowler twice, and led the NFL in game-winning drives once. Maybe Metcalf feels as if Smith doesn't throw him the ball enough.

That is unlikely to change if Metcalf stays with the team. Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the clear WR1 moving forward, and Seattle is probably going to throw the ball less under offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. Metcalf could simply be concerned that he will have diminished numbers in the next few years.
