The outcome of the game became less important Thursday night after Jalen Brunson injured his ankle and left the game. The star point guard had 39 points and 10 assists before exiting the game with 1:24 left in overtime. The matchup vs. the Los Angeles Lakers was tied at 107 when Brunson exited, Los Angeles ended up winning 113-109.
NBA insider Chris Haynes reported that the belief is Brunson suffered an ankle sprain. While that’s not ideal, the way in which he fell on his right ankle warranted fear of a severe injury. Brunson made two free throws before getting subbed out.
It’s no longer 2018, but James Harden is still capable of putting up 50 points. That’s exactly what he did in the Clippers' most recent game, where he went 14-of-24 from the field and 16-of-20 from the free throw line.
Brunson and Harden have similar player profiles: Lefty, ball-dominant guard with a good 3-point shock and a knack for getting to the hoop. New York will be without Brunson Friday, meaning someone else will have to step up as New York’s leading scorer.
Karl-Anthony Towns is averaging 24.5 points, so he’ll be a good candidate to lead New York in points. But Miles McBride will be the one to come in and take Brunson’s starting role while he deals with the ankle injury. McBride is averaging nine points this season and was 0-for-6 from the field Thursday against the Lakers.
