49ers claim cornerback from the Rams off waivers

The San Francisco 49ers claimed Los Angeles Rams cornerback Tre Tomlinson off waivers on Friday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

Tomlinson, a sixth-round pick of the Rams in the 2023 NFL Draft, didn’t see action in any games last season after playing in 15 games during his rookie year.

As a rookie, the cornerback was primarily used as a special-teamer, playing 78 percent of Los Angeles’s special teams snaps in 2023.

He was waived by the Rams on Wednesday and the 49ers pounced to claim him, adding a 5’9, 177-pound cornerback to the roster.

Tomlinson stood out at the NFL Combine a few years ago, running a 4.41 40-yard dash while having a 39’’ vertical jump and 11’0’’ broad jump.

The cornerback was a standout at TCU, racking up 126 tackles, 36 pass breakups, five interceptions, four tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles during his collegiate career.

The 49ers are in need of cornerbacks this offseason, as Charvarius Ward, Isaac Yiadom, Rock Ya-Sin, and Nick McCloud are all free agents, leaving a gap in depth at the position.

Currently, San Francisco has Deommodore Lenoir, Renardo Green, Darrell Luter, Tre Avery, and Chase Lucas on the roster. Avery and Lucas are on non-guaranteed deals, while Luter was a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
