David Moyes makes contract admission about Everton captain Seamus Coleman

David Moyes claims he wants Everton stalwart Seamus Coleman to lead the Blues out in the first game at their new waterfront stadium.

Club captain Coleman, 36, is out of contract in the summer and the Republic of Ireland defender has only made four appearances as he battles injury. He’s currently out and Moyes says he will miss Everton’s clash with Wolves at Molineux on Saturday night.

Coleman has clocked up 16 years at Everton and Moyes says he deserves the right to captain them in their first game at their new 52,888 home. He would like to hand him a new 12-month deal and says he could combine playing with coaching the youngsters, although he admits his injuries are a concern.

“Absolutely and sometimes you have to do the right things,” said Moyes. “Seamus might be required to do that job and he might still be one of the best at it. I don’t think age in football is quite as important as it was years ago in football and look at Modric.

“You don’t just keep people for the sake of keeping them because if you did every club would have hundreds of old players. But if we had our way we would try and keep Seamus around definitely. Or give him the opportunity to be around, but he may have something else on.

“Seamus might be a great person to have around as an extra, who if he wasn’t playing all the games might be able to play in the Under-21s. There’re a lot of teams, who’ve gone with that sort of thing. He could also maybe be a coach with the younger boys if that’s what he chooses to do.

“We might still decide to keep him on anyway, but for me Seamus picking up the injuries is the problem. You’re trying to get your value out of the players. We have to do that a bit more here because we’ve had too many injuries.”

Moyes also admits he was unsure how Everton fans would react to him when he returned. Moyes has been a huge success since coming back two months ago and he is leading Everton away from the drop zone on the back of a seven-match unbeaten run, their best in seven years.

But the Blues boss says he did not know how the supporters would feel about him coming back because he had been away for nearly 12 years. “I didn’t know how I was going to be taken,” said Moyes.

“The day I left was an unbelievable experience. I can still remember it greatly and it was a great send off, I’d done 11-and-a-half years at the club. Over time, I played against them with different clubs, so you never know how things move on.

“Maybe the timing was just right for me when I came back and maybe the timing was right for Evertonians, maybe even more than me. They wanted someone they thought they knew and trusted, who they thought could get them out of the trouble they were in at the time.

“We want to take the club on again, we don’t want to be sitting down where we are. So my aim is to make progress.”
