Pittsburgh Steelers have record-setting amount of cap space to make huge moves

The Pittsburgh Steelers' cap situation could not look much better right now. Heading into the legal tampering period on Monday, the Steelers will have the sixth-most cap space in the entire NFL.

Cole Holcomb’s new contract cleared over $5 million off the books. This should give the Steelers around $64 million in cap space, and they have not released anyone outside of Preston Smith.

Larry Ogunjobi, Cordarrelle Patterson, and Dean Lowry could all see themselves as cut candidates. If they made those moves, they would immediately have over $70 million in cap space to work with, and that might allow them to make multiple splash free-agent signings.

By all accounts, the Steelers will be big game hunters in the wide receiver and cornerback markets. They could do that if they want to make a splash at the defensive line or offensive line. Pittsburgh has room to upgrade the talent on their roster significantly and even make a drastic move they have simply not made in the past.

Patrick Queen set the franchise record for the highest free-agent contract a year ago, but there is a good chance that one, if not two, players could smash that record this year. General manager Omar Khan has made it clear the team will be aggressive in looking for upgrades across the roster, and it certainly seems that two big signings could be on the way.

With the amount of cap space they have, the Steelers can address many of their pressing needs while going best player available in the NFL Draft when that comes around in April, which is always the preferred way that Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin like to operate on draft day.
