Chargers Check All the Boxes for DK Metcalf

Superstar wide receiver DK Metcalf sent shockwaves throughout the NFL this week when he requested a trade from the Seattle Seahawks. It feels like this came out of left field, but the subsequent reporting about the situation reveals that the signs were always there.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Metcalf would like to play for a contender, so it's no surprise he wants a trade. The Seahawks entire roster is littered with young talent, but while they seem to have a bright future, they have only made the playoffs once in the last four years. For a star in the middle of his prime, it made no sense to wait around for improvement.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic spoke about the development on a podcast where she laid out what Metcalf is looking for in a new team. He reportedly wants to go to a place that has warm weather and a "stable" quarterback situation.

This should be sounding off bells in the Los Angeles Chargers' heads because they fit the bill perfectly. Everyone knows about the weather in California and Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has been relentless in his praise of his quarterback Justin Herbert, calling him "one of the great quarterbacks of all time."

Russini also mentioned that Metcalf would need a new contract wherever he's traded to, and the Chargers have more than enough cap space to fit him in. Not only does Los Angeles meet all the two-time Pro-Bowler's requirements, but he is the exact type of player they're looking for.

The Chargers struggles at the receiver position last year have been well documented. Ladd McConkey showed star potential in his rookie season, but outside of him, every receiver on the roster is a question mark. Adding Metcalf would give them a stabilizing presence on the outside to blend perfectly with McConkey's slot excellence.

The Seattle receiver burst onto the scene at the Scouting Combine in 2019, going viral for his freakish athleticism and statuesque build. Standing at 6'4 and weighing 235 pounds, Metcalf possesses a rare combination of speed, strength, and agility for his height which would pair perfectly with Herbert's rocket arm.

The Seahawks are asking for a first and third-round pick in return for their star player, which is a lofty asking price considering some of the other wide receiver trades this offseason. Los Angeles may not be willing to give up that much, but they'd be hard pressed to find another receiver with as much mutual interest and upside as Metcalf.
