Green Bay Packers: Christian Watson’s Dad Hints at What WR Will Be Looking for on Next Contract

Unfortunately, the Green Bay Packers will be without wide receiver Christian Watson for most of the 2025 NFL season. The field-stretching wide receiver, who does not get nearly enough credit for how great he is as a blocker, tore his ACL in the Packers’ Week 18 loss to the Chicago Bears.

While a return in 2025 is definitely possible, if not probable, Watson’s injury is a blow to a team that finds itself in need of another pass catcher. Additionally, 2025 is the final year of his rookie contract. A productive season this year would have helped Watson garner a hefty payday from Green Bay or in free agency. As it stands, though, his future with the franchise beyond this upcoming season is not certain.

Green Bay Packers WR Christian Watson’s Dad Hints at What His Son May Look for in a New Contract

Green Bay Packers, Christian Watson

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson (9) makes a 60-yard reception during the fourth quarter of their game Sunday, November 17, 2024, at Solider Field in Chicago, Illinois. The Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears 20-19.

As many fans are aware, Watson’s father, Tazim Wajid Wajed, formerly known as Tim Watson, was drafted by the Packers in 1993 and spent several seasons in the NFL himself. He is known for his staunch defense of both his son and the team amid the frequent criticisms levied their way.

One fan recently asked Wajed, via X, what his son is looking for on his next contract. And while he would not divulge Watson’s personal business, he did say the following:

“Well, I’m not going to share inside info on Christian’s personal business. But, I will share some of the common sense conversations going into any negotiation now or in the future. Khalil Shakir signed a four-year contract extension through the 2029 season worth $60.2 million with $32 million guaranteed.

“Also, TuTu Atwell just got a $10 million fully guaranteed 1-year contract from the Rams! Look up both players and compare them to what Christian has done, then you’ll have your answer!”

The first wide receiver he mentioned, Khalil Shakir, had 76 receptions for 821 yards and four touchdowns last season, his third year in the NFL (like Watson). For his career, he has 125 receptions for 1,593 yards and seven thouchdowns.

The second one, TuTu Atwell had 42 receptions for 562 yards and no touchdowns last year. In his four year career, he has recorded 99 receptions for 1,343 yards and four touchdowns.

Last year, Watson had 29 receptions for 620 yards and two touchdowns. For his career, he has 98 receptions for 1,653 yards and 14 touchdowns.

As one can see, the Packers wide receiver has out-performed both in terms of receiving yards and touchdowns. While his father correctly would not give specifics, it is fair to assume, from a common sense point of view, that Watson will garner between $10-15 million per season on his next deal.
