John Schneider apparently tried to shoot his shot. It didn’t quite work out.
The Seattle Seahawks made the massive decision to trade starting quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, who will not only reunite Smith with head coach Pete Carroll, but seemingly give him the contract extension the Seahawks were unwilling to give him at the price Smith desired.
This was not and was never going to be a mega-trade given Smith’s market value compared to when the Seahawks got a haul from the Denver Broncos back in 2022 for Russell Wilson, but that doesn’t mean they (reportedly) didn’t try to take a big swing.
According to veteran NFL insider Albert Breer, the Seahawks began their negotiations with the Raiders by trying to trade for superstar pass rusher Maxx Crosby. How about a packaged deal of Geno Smith AND DK Metcalf?
The Seahawks opened trade discussions with the Raiders with this blockbuster proposal—Geno Smith and DK Metcalf to Vegas for Maxx Crosby. Vegas QUICKLY shot that down, and told Seattle that Crosby was not available.
But talks continued, and led to Geno becoming a Raider.

Earlier this week Crosby signed a three-year, $106.5 million extension that makes him the highest paid non-quarterback in the NFL.
Ultimately, Metcalf is still with the Seahawks. Smith went for a third-round pick, of which way too many insiders have been all over the shop as to which one the Raiders actually sent. They have their native pick at No. 68, and one of No. 73 or No. 92 is actually one from the Davante Adams trade. It’s unclear which third-rounder they actually got from them, so hold off on any draft capital updates until we get clarification.
