Shocking trade eliminates quarterback options for Pittsburgh Steelers

The Seattle Seahawks are trading Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders for a third round, according to multiple reports. It is another option off the board for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and brings Justin Fields and Russell Wilson into sure focus.

Smith will cost the Raiders $25 million this season, but will have to land an extension to stay with the team beyond this year. He is asking for $40 to $45 million per year, which could have been a significant hurdle in the Steelers' pursuit of him.

The Steelers could have offered up their third-round pick and theoretically landed him. Las Vegas offered the No. 92 overall selection, while the Steelers hold the No. 83 selection, so that could have been enough to do it.

Wilson and Fields also have one less option for them on the open market. Both New York jobs are still open for the Steelers quarterbacks, but both were linked to the Raiders' opening in some ways. As a result, this at leat points toward it being likelier one of those quarterbacks returning to the Steelers.
