Thousands of residents in eastern Australia were ordered to evacuate or stay indoors as Cyclone Alfred lashes the region with torrential rain, fierce winds and towering waves, causing widespread power outages, beach erosion, and airport closures.

The tropical storm, which crossed coastal islands ahead of its expected landfall early today has been downgraded to a category 1, but warnings of extremely dangerous wind, rain and flooding remain.
