TAIPEI -- Taiwan can elevate its global position by incorporating international human rights standards into its business practices in places where such rights are under threat, such as Myanmar, according to a veteran British diplomat who was once imprisoned by the military regime in Naypyitaw.

"The Taiwanese government needs to follow up on its 2020-2024 Business and Human Rights National Action Plan and give guidance to Taiwanese businesses going global about how to operate consistent with international human rights standards," Vicky Bowman, a former U.K. ambassador to Myanmar, told Nikkei Asia during a visit to Taipei. "This is how Taiwan can contribute to being a responsible global player."
