FLORENCE, Ala. – The ULM softball team (15-10) fell on the road in the first day of the North Alabama Tournament, dropping games against Samford (15-7) and UNA (17-3) on Friday (March 7). After being shut out in the first game, the Warhawks scored one against the Lions before falling in a run-rule defeat.

Game One: Samford 1, ULM 0

The bats did not start hot for either team in the second game of the UNA Tournament, neither team able to pick up a score for the majority of the game. In the fourth inning, Samford's Grier Bruce hit a sacrifice fly to score the lone run of the game. Even as the Warhawks made multiple attempts to tie it up, Samford maintained the 1-0 lead for the win in seven innings.

Brooklin Lippert picked up one of two hits for ULM, with Meagan Brown capturing the other. Brown is also credited with the lone walk of the game. Maddie Nichols was credited with the loss, allowing four hits and a run, striking out a batter in the process.

Game Two: North Alabama 9, ULM 1 (6 inn.)

ULM scored first against the host team in the second inning, with three consecutive walks scoring Maryssa Zenzen for the 1-0 lead. North Alabama followed suit in the second, scoring three runs to gain the lead on an error, a double and a sacrifice fly.

Another three-run inning came in the third inning for the Lions, with back-to-back doubles scoring three for the 6-1 lead. As ULM continued to battle for the comeback, North Alabama continued to tack on the runs, looking for the run-rule.

The Warhawks held on through the fourth and fifth innings, shutting out the Lion offense. But a third three-run inning in the sixth closed out the game. Two singles and a hit-by-pitch scenario gave UNA the 9-1 victory in six innings.

Hollie Thomas picked up the lone hits in the game with two. Carys Platt's walk scored the run for the Warhawks, leading the team in RBIs. Dakota Lake was credited with the loss, allowing five hits and five runs, striking out three batters.

The softball team will continue in the North Alabama Tournament this weekend, competing against North Alabama, Samford and Detroit Mercy. The next game featuring the Warhawks will be on Saturday (March 8) at 11 a.m., facing the Detroit Mercy Titans for the first time. ULM will then take on Samford yet again on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
