Man Utd have just three undroppables for next season - 17 stars are at risk under Amorim

Ruben Amorim will be preparing to oversee mass change at Manchester United this summer to fund transfer spending and clear deadwood that has contributed to one of the club's worst-ever seasons. INEOS are set to offer him the backing to do that, which will leave the vast majority of the United squad vulnerable to the axe.

Amorim has repeatedly bemoaned the lack of specific "characteristics" in the group of players he inherited from Erik ten Hag in November. His summer focus will be recruiting signings who do fit the mould while offloading those who don't. And if the Portuguese tactician's early results are anything to go by, plenty of his current stars feature in the latter category.

Only three United players can enter next season feeling like they are almost guaranteed to start matches.

United captain Bruno Fernandes is an obvious inclusion in that. However, whether he remains at Old Trafford beyond the summer likely won't be up to the club. The 30-year-old deserves better.

Manuel Ugarte is another. He is a rare example of a player signed by Ten Hag who suits Amorim's 3-4-3 system. United will be targeting a midfield signing to partner the Uruguayan.

Patrick Dorgu has to be the third after becoming Amorim's first signing in January, joining in a £25million deal from Lecce. United have addressed the left-wing-back position and will focus on other areas.

Nine players should be considered safe but may or may not be starting games based on the Red Devils' recruitment.

Amad, Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro headline this category as players who Amorim could build around for the long term.

Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt will also likely remain important members of the squad, as well as Lisandro Martinez, once he returns from his ACL injury.

Ayden Heaven and Toby Collyer are set to continue as squad options, while Altay Bayindir should, too, stay put unless he wants regular football elsewhere.

Elsewhere in the dressing room, it's anyone's guess. Tom Heaton, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans and Christian Eriksen will all leave as free agents once their contracts expire in July.

Meanwhile, Chelsea and Aston Villa have options to buy Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, respectively, for £25m and £40m. Both have played their last game for the club.

United will surely listen to offers for the other 11 first-team players, all of whom are either not good enough or don't fit Amorim's system.

Andre Onana, Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot, Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw make up the defensive names in the shop window should suitable interest emerge.

Casemiro and Mason Mount also face uncertain futures, while Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho are by no means sure to stay.

Amorim will retain most of his squad; this isn't a video game. But it's a matter of fact that in an ideal world, most of United's squad will look different in two or three years' time.
