Romano: United&Amorim want to sign'extraordinary'£55m star, depends on two conditions

Manchester United are interested in signing one of Europe’s in-form strikers this summer.

The Red Devils have had a frustrating campaign in the Premier League. They are languishing 14th in the table with 33 points from 27 games.

The club have lacked a quality striker up front, and manager Ruben Amorim may want a proper solution before next season.

Speaking on his Youtube channel, Romano said that Viktor Gyokeres is poised to depart Sporting CP this summer and will leave for less than his £84 million release clause.

The striker has a pact with the Portuguese champions. Sporting CP are prepared to accept a package between £55m to £63m to part ways with the Swedish sensation.

The reputed journalist added that there is appreciation from United and Amorim for Gyokeres.

The striker has a strong bond with the manager, but ultimately, a transfer could depend on the budget and whether United qualify for the Champions League next season.

The Red Devils may have to offload players to pursue new signings.

Romano said: “We had many reports of Man Utd and the appreciation of Amorim for Gyokeres is obviously there.

“He loves Gyokeres and Gyokeres loves him for sure. But for Man Utd, we said it for Osimhen and we say it for Gyokeres too.

“It depends on the budget and how much they can spend, and what happens with European football. So that’s really important. And Amorim was clear: Sell players to buy new players.”

Gyokeres signed for Sporting CP from Coventry City in 2023. He had a brilliant debut season with 43 goals and 15 assists from 50 appearances across all competitions.

Despite his exploits, elite European clubs were reluctant to pay his reported release clause but the scenario could be different this summer.

Gyokeres has proved himself again with 37 goals and nine assists from 39 appearances. His consistency should attract plenty of suitors.

Meanwhile, Sporting’s willingness to accept a reduced fee could invite offers too. A long-term payment plan could be negotiated as well.

Amorim will undoubtedly be interested in a reunion with the striker described as ‘extraordinary‘ by Metro, but a transfer won’t be easy to pull off.

United are close to breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules. Their current league position means they will receive less revenue from TV rights.

Winning the Europa League would guarantee Champions League football, but they must beat Real Sociedad first to make the quarter-final.

The Athletic have already reported that Gyokeres prefers to join a Champions League outfit.

United’s prospects of signing him could largely depend on lifting the Europa League title.
