Seamus Coleman’s future at Everton is up in the air as the 36-year-old enters the final months of his contract at Goodison Park.

Coleman is a modern-day Everton legend and has been an absolute stalwart in blue since signing for the Toffees from Sligo Rovers in 2009, making 426 appearances in all competition and scoring 28 goals.

Everton have paid exorbitant and unwarranted transfer fees for many a player in recent years, but they’ve certainly got value for money for Coleman, who has more than repaid the £60,000 fee they paid for him.

Now 36, though, Coleman’s influence at Goodison is on the wane with just three Premier League appearances this term, and it remains to be seen what the future holds for the Irishman this summer.

Moyes makes Everton position clear on Coleman

Coleman is far from the only Everton player facing speculation over their future this summer, with fellow full-back Ashley Young turning 40 in July and a further 11 players out of contract at the end of June.

However, amid the exit uncertainty, Moyes has spoken out and said he wants Coleman and his influence to remain on Merseyside next season, be that in a playing or coaching capacity as part of the Scot’s backroom team.

“You don’t just keep people for the sake of keeping them – but if we had our way we would try and keep Seamus around definitely,” Moyes told reporters on Friday (7 March).

“We have to see what he wants and we have not made a decision on what we are going to do. We might still decide to keep him on anyway, but for me Seamus picking up the injuries is the problem.”

Seamus Coleman surely set for future Everton role

The coming summer promises to be one of the most transitional in Everton’s entire history, as they leave Goodison Park after 132 years for their new home at Bramley-Moore Dock on Liverpool’s waterfront.

With The Friedkin Group at the helm since December and a number of sweeping changes made to the Blues’ boardroom, more will follow as Everton look to transform their operating structure for the new era.

However, as is often the case in football; the more things change, the more they stay the same, and that’s certainly been aided by the feel-good factor brought by Moyes’ return to Merseyside in January.

Moyes has overseen a massive uptick in form since taking charge, and as the man who brought Coleman to Everton 16 years ago, he’ll surely want to keep the veteran Irishman in the fold to ease their transition.

It’s set to be all-new at Everton in the coming months, but with Moyes at the helm and Coleman part of either his backroom team or a new-look squad, the never-say-die spirit of Goodison will certainly live on.
