Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi made six starts in all competitions this season and two of them were in the Premier League.
The striker doesn’t seem to be pleased with his role under Nuno Espírito Santo. Recent claims from the UK stated that he arouses interest from the Bundesliga, without naming the clubs.
Berliner Zeitung relay that and then look at whether the Nottingham Forest player can move to Germany in the summer window.
They indicate the latest claims from the UK have ’caused quite a stir’ at Union Berlin. The Nigeria international spent two years with them before joining the Reds in 2022. He managed 25 goals and five assists from 65 games for the German club.
When describing his spell at Union Berlin, the newspaper states: ‘It was the icing on the cake of two seasons that could hardly have gone better, not only for the club but also for the player himself.’
It won’t be easy for them or another German club to take Awoniyi away from Nottingham Forest. His contract lasts until 2027, and the report states the interested parties have to ‘dig deep into their pockets’.
Berlin Live also give their take on the possibility of the frontman returning to his old club in the next window. They state ‘under certain circumstances, this could actually make sense’.
From a sporting point of view, it makes sense to bring him back despite Marin Ljubičić’s arrival the winter market. He can be moved to the right wing to accommodate Awoniyi.
They are 14th in the table [18 teams in the league], six points above the relegation zone. If they continue in the Bundesliga, the report states Union Berlin would ‘certainly have a lot of money to lure’ their former player.
There are conditions for Awoniyi to return and it’ll be interesting to see if there’ll be any developments in this case.
