Darren Eales issues update on Eddie Howe's security as Newcastle's manager

CEO Darren Eales has reaffirmed Newcastle’s commitment to Eddie Howe, praising the manager’s achievements during his tenure in charge of the team and emphasizing the club’s satisfaction with his leadership since being appointed in 2021.

Chris Waugh of The Athletic reports that Eales described Howe as a “wonderful” and “amazing manager” who has done a “remarkable” job in taking Newcastle from a relegation battle to Champions League qualification and two Carabao Cup finals in just two full seasons in charge.

Eales’ comments come in the context of last summer, when internal changes—including the departure of Amanda Staveley and the appointment of Paul Mitchell—created uncertainty around Howe’s working relationships and security at the post.

The manager had openly acknowledged the shifting dynamics, stating at the time, “There’s no point saying I’m happy staying at Newcastle if the dynamic isn’t right.”

Despite those initial challenging adjustments, Howe and Mitchell seem to have found a way to work together, with Eales highlighting Howe’s understanding of the financial limitations imposed by profit and sustainability rules (PSR) and cannot complaining too much about it.

“What’s great about Eddie is he’s super collaborative,” Eales said. “He’s unique as a manager in that he appreciates and understands we’ve got this PSR cap.

"He knows the club and the ownership are providing the maximum support they can within the rules and that every decision has a knock-on effect.”

Eales was clear that Newcastle is fully behind Howe.

“We’re obviously super pleased that we’ve got Eddie as our coach. We’re delighted he’s with us and hopefully he’s going to be with us for a long time.”
