Last summer, Sporting refused to let Pedro Gonçalves leave unless his €80m clause is activated after Aston Villa showed interest.
The Villans wanted to sign the winger in the winter market as they looked to add to their squad. Last November, A Bola stated they were preparing an offer as Aston Villa director Monchi was keen on bringing him to the club.
On November 10th, Gonçalves suffered an injury blow, and it forced Aston Villa to look at elsewhere in January.
The Portugal international hasn’t yet recovered, but this hasn’t put off the Birmingham club. That’s at least what the weekend edition of Jornal de Notícias are reporting.
It’s claimed Unai Emery’s side and Bayer Leverkusen ‘remain interested’ despite his injury situation.
The two clubs are closely monitoring the 26-year-old’s recovery process because they have an intention of making an approach in the summer window.
Gonçalves is expected to return to action for Sporting’s clash against Estrela da Amadora at the end of this month. His immediate focus is on regaining fitness and helping the Lions win the title.
The attacker’s contract until 2027 has a €80m clause and the report states the renewal isn’t ruled out. Despite this and his injury situation, Aston Villa continue to keep an eye on Gonçalves.
