Real Madrid's involvement in the Club World Cup means they are reportedly prepared to pay Liverpool a fee in order to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold early.
The Spanish giants have been heavily linked with a move for Alexander-Arnold, but had an offer rejected by Liverpool in the January transfer window. However, the England international is out of contract at the end of the season and will be able to join Madrid on a free transfer next summer.
According to a new report from the The Sun, Liverpool could still bank a transfer fee as Madrid want Alexander-Arnold to be available for the Club World Cup. The right-back's contract does not expire until June 30 and the tournament is set to start on June 14, meaning Madrid would have to reach an agreement with Liverpool to release Alexander-Arnold from his deal early.
The report adds that the summer transfer window is set to open early this year on June 1 meaning new signings can play at the Club World Cup, while FIFA has also created an "exceptional registration window" which will allow clubs involved in the tournament to replace players in their squad between June 27 and July 3.
However, it is claimed that Liverpool have 'not given up hope' that Alexander-Arnold will decide to remain at Anfield, with manager Arne Slot insisting in January that the 26-year-old remains "fully committed" to the club.
"I completely understand the question and why you ask it, but you already know the answer: these conversations I have never shared, not about Trent, not about any others, about what I talk to them about," Slot said.
"It was a conversation as many others we had, me and Trent, so let's leave it at that. I can tell you he is playing on Sunday and hopefully he brings the same performances as he brought in for the last half-year, because everybody saw how great a first half of the season he had, how much he is here, how much he wants to win here.

"I see him on the training ground every day working his a** off. He is fully committed to us and he will play on Sunday.
"If it would destabilise players at Liverpool if other people talk about them, then we would really have a problem because if you play at one of the biggest clubs in the world everybody is always - for 12 months long - talking about you, sometimes in relation to other clubs.
"That happens so many times for our players, so if that destabilises them then we really would have had a problem, not only now but in the last six months because there were some talks about our players in the last six months and I don't think it destabilised them at all."
