The Ohuhu Honolulu S Series is ideal for detailed drawing and coloring. It features a round, ergonomic design and comes in 363 colors. Each marker has a flexible brush tip on one side and a soft chisel tip on the other, providing versatility for both fine details and broader strokes. The Ohuhu brush tip is crafted with flexible nylon, ideal for shading, blending, and layering and a staple on many of the Ohuhu marker series. While the soft chisel tip offers flexibility and control over line width and thickness, making it perfect for intricate details or bold strokes. The soft chisel tip is only currently available in the Honolulu S Series.

To keep your Ohuhu markers in optimal condition, store them in a cool place away from direct sunlight. Since the ink is alcohol-based, always keep the markers capped and store them away from fire or any flammable substances.

Ohuhu offers 16ML marker refills designed for most of their marker series. These refills come in compact, marker-sized bottles for convenient storage. Currently, refills are available for 51 colors, with more in development. Each refill can replenish an Ohuhu Honolulu Series marker up to five times.

If your color is unavailable in refills, Ohuhu also allows you to purchase individual markers separately.

To refill your marker, you have two options:

Use tweezers to remove the chisel or brush tip, then squeeze the ink bottle to insert the ink directly into the marker.

Drip the ink directly onto the brush or chisel tip without removing it.

I did not receive refills to test the performance or ease of this process.

Included with the Ohuhu Honolulu S Series 48-marker set was a colorless blender marker (No. 0). This marker can be used to:

✔ Blur and soften ink that has already been applied

✔ Help remove small mistakes on canvas

✔ Blend out colors to create white and/or lighter shades

✔ Wet your paper before coloring to create a smoother effect

Ohuhu stands behind their products and defects can happen. If you have an issue with your product, contact Ohuhu customer service team at su*****@oh****.com orthe form on the Ohuhu website and the company states they will “find a solution for you”.

Performance

Ohuhu markers are dye-ink-based, meaning they retain their color by soaking into the surface of the medium they’re used on. Because of this, they are best suited for paper or cloth and are not ideal for use on metal, glass, or acrylic. If you’re unfamiliar with dye-ink-based markers, it’s important to note that their vibrancy can vary depending on the type of paper used. This is because dyes soak into the paper, while pigments remain on the surface.

You may notice a slight difference between the color on the marker cap and the actual ink. While the ink inside the markers is made from dye, the cap colors are derived from pigments and resins. This is why Ohuhu includes handy color swatch cards, allowing for a more accurate preview of each shade.

Since these markers are designed for porous surfaces, they may stain if used on non-porous materials. If you need to use them on such surfaces, opt for easily cleaned ones where the ink can be wiped off without leaving a mark. Additionally, Ohuhu markers tend to bleed through thin paper. For the best results, use paper with a higher GSM (grams per square meter), as heavier paper minimizes ink bleed. Ohuhu recommends using their own marker pads or mixed-media pads. If using regular paper, place an extra sheet or the provided clear barrier underneath to prevent ink from seeping through.

I do have other alcohol-based markers that I’ve been using, but there’s definitely something to be said about the quality of the Ohuhu Honolulu S Series. They almost feel too fancy for my skill level, but I’ve really enjoyed using them and seeing my coloring and blending skills improve.

Final thoughts

The Ohuhu Honolulu S Series Dual-Tip Alcohol Markers (48-Color Basic Tones Set) offer a high-quality and versatile experience for both beginners and experienced artists. With a flexible brush tip and a soft chisel tip, these markers excel at detailed work and bold strokes, making them ideal for various artistic techniques. The markers provide a smooth application and blend beautifully. While using on paper, I didn’t see much use for the blender marker, perhaps it would be more useful on other mediums like canvas. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to expand your marker collection, these markers are definitely worth considering. I’m excited to add more of the Ohuhu Series marker options to my collection soon!
