DK Metcalf, of course, recently requested a trade. It’ll be interesting to see where the Seattle Seahawks trade the star receiver. What about the Indianapolis Colts? Indy could use a two-time Pro Bowl receiver like Metcalf. He would undoubtedly make their offense better.
Despite Metcalf’s trade request, Seahawks general manager John Schneider didn’t rule out the possibility that he could still play in Seattle next season (via Seattle Sports 710 AM’s Dave Wyman and Bob Stelton):
“But worst-case scenario, we have an amazing, explosive, powerful athlete playing receiver for us again in 2025. So we’ll see where this goes.”
Metcalf is one of the NFL’s best receivers. Therefore, several teams will show interest in acquiring him. Should the Colts make an offer?
Should the Indianapolis Colts Trade for DK Metcalf?
His Career in Seattle
The Seahawks drafted Metcalf in the second round (64th overall pick) of the 2019 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he caught 58 passes for 900 yards and seven touchdowns. He recorded seven receptions for 160 yards and a touchdown in Seattle’s playoff win over the Philadelphia Eagles. It was the NFL record for most receiving yards by a rookie in a postseason game.
In 2020, Metcalf finished with 83 receptions for 1,303 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl and was named a second-team All-Pro.
Metcalf finished the 2023 campaign with 66 receptions for 1,114 yards and eight touchdowns. He was named to the second Pro Bowl of his career. Last season, he caught 66 passes for 992 yards and five touchdowns.
Does a DK Metcalf Trade Make Sense for the Colts?
Indianapolis possesses a solid wide receiver corps. The group is led by Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, and Alec Pierce. Each of those players had over 800 receiving yards last season. And don’t forget about Adonai Mitchell. Although he’s coming off a disappointing rookie year, the Colts shouldn’t give up on him just yet. He has the potential to be an impact player.
However, DK Metcalf supersedes them all. The former Ole Miss Star has reached the 900-yard receiving mark in all six of his NFL seasons. He had over 1,000 yards in three of those years.
Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has struggled thus far since being drafted in 2023. Teaming with a dynamic player like Metcalf could surely help elevate his game in 2025. With the likes of Metcalf, Pittman Jr, and star running back Jonathan Taylor, Richardson and the Colts could sport an exciting offense in Indianapolis.
However, the Colts would have to give up quite a bit to trade for Metcalf. Dianna Russini, Michael Shawn-Dugar, and Chris Licata of The Athletic reported that the Seahawks want a first-round pick and a third-round pick in return.
Yes, a first and third-round pick is a lot to give up. Metcalf is an immensely talented player, but he’s not a Prime Jerry Rice.
The Colts are fine with their current wide receiver room. They should keep their first-round pick and possibly draft a much-needed tight end like Penn State’s Tyler Warren. Plus, the team also needs to focus on improving their defense, which struggled in 2024. So adding DK Metcalf this spring is most likely not going to happen.
