ISTANBUL (AA) – A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal Saturday afternoon, according to English daily The Kathmandu Post, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The quake – with its epicenter in Dinggye, in China's Tibet region, some 55 kilometers (34 miles) from Sankhuwasabha in Koshi, Eastern Nepal – jolted several parts of the country, including the Kathmandu Valley.
The jolt was felt at 2.35 pm (0850GMT), the daily said, citing an official at the National Seismological Centre in the capital Kathmandu.
“This is an aftershock from a recent quake in Tibet that shook various parts of Nepal as well in January,” the official said.
No damage or casualties have been reported so far.
Nepal, located in a seismically active region along the Himalayan fault line, is prone to earthquakes due to the ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
The country has experienced several devastating quakes in the past, including a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015 which caused widespread destruction and loss of life.
