Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has made a daring statement following their 7-1 win over PSV in Champions League on Tuesday.
Mikel Merino with some strong words after Arsenal’s 7-1 win over PSV
The Gunners midfielder has made a bold statement that his team are confident and capable of winning the Champions League this campaign. They won 7-1 against PSV Eindhoven in the first-leg of the round of 16 game on Tuesday. They now have a comfortable lead of 6 goals for their second-leg at the Emirates Stadium next week.
Merino believes that his team have made their intentions clear after their dominant display. He thinks that the north London side are in race for the biggest European silverware.
The Spain international said: “I guess that whenever you start a competition like this, if you don’t think that you can win it, it’s better not to come and play.
“I think it has to be the goal of every single team in this tournament—and it is ours, for sure. We are here to win, to win every single game, and if we do what we know we can do, in the end, I think we will be close to winning it.
“We don’t have to focus too much on it (each game). We have to be proud, but at the same time, think about the next game. It is coming real soon, and we need to show the same mentality that we did at PSV.”

Arsenal are almost in the last-eight
Arsenal are most likely to progress through to the Champions League last eight. As they lead PSV by six goals, they will undoubtedly advance to the next round.
Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid will be their opponents in the quarter-finals if they defeat the Dutch team. Emirates Stadium will host Arsenal’s second-leg of the round of 16 as well as first-leg of the last-eight should they qualify.
Mikel Arteta’s side will be expecting the much awaited return of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka. It will be huge boost for them if the pair returns for their potential quarter-final fixtures.
On the other hand, Ethan Nwaneri has been impressive in the absences of these star players. The Gunners are looking confident to fight for the biggest price in Europe this year.
