Leicester City star asked to leave in £35m transfer, he then made just 23 appearances in five…

One Leicester City player with over 200 appearances may regret leaving the club.

The Foxes have seen some top players depart the King Power Stadium over the last several years.

Riyad Mahrez joined Manchester City in a £60m deal after he helped Leicester City win the Premier League title.

Youri Tielemans moved to Aston Villa on a free transfer and is now playing Champions League football in 2024/25.

N’Golo Kante was sold to Chelsea following Leicester’s historic Premier League title-winning season of 2015/16.

Kante was joined at Stamford Bridge several years later by Ben Chiwell, who is now struggling to get minutes this season on loan at Crystal Palace.

But Chilwell and the Frenchman are not the only ones to swap the Midlands for Chelsea in the last decade.

He provided 10 goal contributions in the league that season and his form even earned him an England debut in March 2016.

The midfielder spent another year at the King Power before deciding to leave Leicester for Chelsea in 2017.

A report from the BBC at the time claimed that Drinkwater had asked to leave the Foxes amid interest from the West London outfit, who paid £35m for his services.

However, the Englishman really struggled to ever cement himself as a regular feature for the Blues, making just 23 senior appearances in five years. In contrast, he played 218 matches for Leicester.

Drinkwater had loan stints with the likes of Burnley and Aston Villa while on Chelsea’s books before he was eventually released in July 2022.

What does Danny Drinkwater do now

Over a year after leaving Chelsea and not signing for another team, Drinkwater announced his retirement from football in October 2023.

He said, as quoted by BBC Sport: “I think I’ve been in limbo for too long.

“I’ve been wanting to play but not getting the opportunity to play at a standard or a level where I felt valued,” Drinkwater said.

“I’ve never been really obsessed with football, I’ve just loved it. The idea of me dropping down is fine but it’s the idea of not playing to my worth.”

Following his retirement from football, as per Bein Sports, Drinkwater decided to start working in construction.
