Graeme Bailey reveals Rangers' prospective new investors may take chance on 'sad' manager

Rangers' prospective new owners, 49ers Enterprises, are reportedly eager to bring Steven Gerrard back to the club as manager for a second spell, according to Graeme Bailey, via TBR Football.

The Gers are currently without a manager, having seen Phillipe Clement dismissed amid a run of poor form that has seen the side fall 16 points adrift from stern rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Barry Ferguson has been in charge as an interim, but the club's top brass are eager to hire a permanent boss soon to kick-start a new era at Ibrox.

New Rangers Owners Eager to Hire Gerrard

The Liverpool legend is currently without a managerial job

As per the report from TBR Football, Rangers' new investors are "keen" on hiring Gerrard as their new manager, four years after his previous spell at the club.

The 44-year-old signed on as the Light Blues' head coach in 2018 for what was his first managerial role. He oversaw a successful three-year tenure, winning the Scottish Premiership in 2021 without losing a single league fixture.

Gerrard then swapped life in Glasgow for the English Midlands, signing for Premier League outfit Aston Villa. This stint was short-lived however, and he managed just two wins in the opening 12 league games of the 2021/22 season before his dismissal.

In 2023, Gerrard completed an unexpected switch to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, but he soon fell under backlash from pundits, who labelled him "sad" and criticised his lack of direction. He is now available to hire after mutually terminating his contract with the club in January 2025.

Despite forgettable spells at both Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard remains fondly remembered by Rangers fans. The Glaswegian outfit is yet to win a single title since the Englishman's departure, and he could be an ideal option to lead a new era and usurp Celtic of their dominance in Scottish football.

Meanwhile, the 49ers are expected to complete their takeover in the summer at the latest, with talks between parties thought to be at an "advanced level", as revealed exclusively by GIVEMESPORT sources.
