Kobbie Mainoo's future at Manchester United is uncertain as he continues to be linked with a move away from Old Trafford in the summer.

The midfielder enjoyed a breakout season in 2023/24, and his outstanding form earned him a place in England's Euro 2024 squad last year. The 19-year-old is a product of United's academy, and he last signed an extension in 2023, with his new deal set to expire in 2027, although there is an option for a further year.

A new report this week from The Guardian claims Mainoo plans to reject a fresh contract proposal from United and seek a move abroad. It has also been suggested the Manchester club are open to a sale of the academy graduate in a bid to boost their finances, but it would take a fee in the region of £70m for them to consider a sale.

Previously, Mainoo had been linked with Premier League rivals Chelsea, who have a recent track record of snapping up young talent. That being said, the report from The Guardian indicates a move to another English club is not part of his plans, with clubs abroad the favoured option.

A previous article from GiveMeSport claims Chelsea already have a doubt about whether they would be able to lure Mainoo to Stamford Bridge. That article does note it would take a significantly improved pay package for the United star to consider departing, especially since his contract demands to his current club are rumoured to be in the region of £150,000 to £180,000 per week.

While it has been emphasised there has been no direct contact with any other clubs, the uncertainty around Mainoo's contract situation will undoubtedly alert clubs across the continent. Prior to making his breakthrough last season, the youngster spent a period of time on the sidelines due to injury.

Spanish outlet Don Diario reported last year that La Liga giants Real Madrid were eager to add a young midfielder to their squad and Mainoo was among the prospects to catch the eye. While undergoing treatment for his injury, Mainoo opted to learn Spanish as a way to pass time.

In an interview with The Telegraph last summer, Mainoo revealed he took up lessons on Zoom when he was injured during pre-season. He admitted it was tough to keep up once he returned to playing, but it's something he enjoyed and wants to pick up again.
