Backgrounder: Canada announces projects to advance gender equality and empower women and girls

Today, on behalf of the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, Anita Vandenbeld, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development, announced the following 20 projects, totaling $193.45 million.

Project: Renewed Women’s Voice and Leadership – Bangladesh

Partner: Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF)

Funding: $9,700,000 (2024-2025 to 2029-2030)

This project will build on the success of the first Women's Voice and Leadership project, expanding the reach to strengthen more women’s rights organizations and bolster the role of organizations led by women and marginalized minority communities in the national conversation at this critical time.

Project: Renewed Women's Voice and Leadership – Colombia

Partner: Oxfam Quebec and Fondo Lunaria

Funding: $8,000,000 (2024-2025 to 2029-2030)

This project will support Colombian women’s rights organizations and LBTQI+ groups to enhance their organizational sustainability and capacity, programming and advocacy, and networking and alliance-building.

Project: Renewed Women's Voice and Leadership – Ghana

Partner: Plan International Canada

Funding: $9,000,000 (2024-2025 to 2029-2030)

This project aims to address the lack of access to diversified funding sources and models to women’s rights organizations and youth-led organizations in Ghana, with a focus on supporting organizations working with under-represented groups and marginalized women and girls.

Project: Empowering Adolescent Girls through Reproductive Health in Ghana

Partner: UNFPA and UNICEF

Funding: $25,000,000 (2024-2025 to 2029-2030)

This project aims to enable adolescent girls to experience healthier, safer, and more empowered life transition into adulthood through informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health, by increasing the use of quality sexual and reproductive health services, and by helping them influence policies and financing related to their reproductive health and rights.

Project: Women’s Voice and Leadership – Guatemala

Partner: Oxfam Canada

Funding: $2,050,500 (2025-2026 to 2027-2028)

The project aims to increase the reach of capacity strengthening activities with Indigenous women’s rights organizations, integrate a greater intersectional approach to preventing, responding to and reducing violence and racism against Indigenous women and LGBTQI+ people, and enhance the capacity of local Indigenous women’s rights organizations to influence policy and legal frameworks on the rights of Indigenous women and girls in alliance with International Indigenous women’s rights organizations.

Project: Renewed Women’s Voice and Leadership – Kenya

Partner: CARE Canada

Funding: $8,100,000 (2024-2025 to 2029-2030)

This project supports local and regional women’s rights organizations, LBTQI+ groups, and feminist networks working to promote the rights of women and girls, and to advance gender equality.

Project: Renewed Women’s Voice and Leadership – Mozambique

Partner: Centro de Aprendizagem e Capaciticao da Sociedade Civil (CESC)

Funding: $9,850,000 (2024-2025 to 2028-2029)

This project will build on Canada’s leadership in building the capacity of women's rights organizations in Mozambique, to help address key issues such as child, early and forced marriage, sexual and gender-based violence, and women’s political participation.

Project: Renewed Women’s Voice and Leadership – Central America

Partner: Oxfam Quebec and Oxfam Canada

Funding: $12,200,000 (2024-2025 to 2029-2030)

This project aims to strengthen the capacity of women's rights organizations in Central America by providing multi-year and rapid-response funding, delivering training, and strengthening regional cooperation.

Project: Renewed Women's Voice and Leadership – Movement Building

Partner: Association for Women's Rights in Development

Funding: $1,250,000 (2024-2025 to 2027-2028)

This project aims to strengthen women’s rights organizations and feminist movements, including Women’s, Voice and Leadership partners, and is expected to reach at least 500 organizations.

Project: Renewed Women's Voice and Leadership – Feminist Learning Partnership

Partner: International Development Research Centre (IDRC)

Funding: $9,850,000 (2025-2026 to 2028-2029)

This project is expected to benefit at least 2,200 women’s rights and LBTQI+ organizations across the globe through peer learning and knowledge sharing. Organizations will gain new insights into strategies and practical ways to strengthen their programs and advocacy, and to foster their organizational sustainability.

Project: Renewed Women’s Voice and Leadership – Somalia

Partner: Plan International Canada

Funding: $7,250,000 (2024-2025 to 2029-2030)

This project supports local and regional women’s rights organizations and feminist networks working to promote the rights of women and girls and to advance gender equality.

Project: Renewed Women’s Voice and Leadership – South Sudan

Partner: Care Canada

Funding: $15,500,000 (2024-2025 to 2030-2031)

This project supports local and regional women’s organizations and networks that are working to promote women’s rights, and advance women’s empowerment and gender equality in developing countries. This is done by supporting their activities, building institutional capacity, and promoting network and alliance-building, as women’s rights and feminist organizations are critical agents of change.

Project: Renewed Women’s Voice and Leadership – Tanzania

Partner: Cuso International

Funding: $4,999,447 (2024-2025 to 2029-2030)

This project supports local and regional women’s rights organizations, vulnerable groups, and feminist networks working to promote the rights of women and girls and to advance gender equality.

Project: Advancing Skills and Opportunities for Youth, Women and Other Vulnerable Groups in Lebanon (SOAR)

Partner: International Organization for Migration (IOM)

Funding: $20,000,000 (2024-2025 to 2028-2029)

This project seeks to enhance the employability and entrepreneurship of youth, women, refugees and persons with disabilities across Lebanon, contributing to sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

Project: Prévention violences faites aux femmes

Partner: UN Women

Funding: $4,000,000 (2024-2025 to 2028-2029)

This project aims to ensure that women survivors of violence have access to quality care services and to promote the conditions for their economic empowerment in the Casablanca-Settat and Fès-Meknès regions.

Project: Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention: Empowering Girls in Indigenous and Tribal Communities

Partner: UNFPA

Funding: $8,000,000 (2024-2025 to 2028-2029)

This project aims to increase the use of adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health services, including contraceptives, and empower adolescents through quality, comprehensive, sexuality education, particularly among Indigenous girls and young women in Belize and Suriname.

Project: EmpowerED - Support to UNFPA Comprehensive

Sexuality Education (CSE) Global Initiative

Partner: UNFPA

Funding: $20,000,000 (2024-2025 to 2026-2027)

This project aims to improve access to gender-transformative comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) for an estimated 7.5 million adolescents and youth in 10 countries (Ethiopia, Malawi, Zambia, Benin, Ghana, Tunisia, Philippines, Argentina, Colombia, and Moldova).

Project: Promoting and Protecting Women’s and Girls’ rights (EmpowerHER)

Partner: Alinea International

Funding: $5,000,000 (2024-2025 to 2027-2028)

This project aims to improve equality, enjoyment of human rights, freedom from sexual and gender-based violence for women and girls in Kiribati, Solomon Islands and Tonga.

Project: Somali Midwives for Improving Lives and Enhancing Sexual and Reproductive Health (SMILES)

Partner: Care Canada and the Canadian Association of Midwives

Funding: $12,200,000 (2024-2025 to 2029-2030)

This project aims to improve sexual and reproductive health and rights for Somali women and adolescent girls by increasing the availability of qualified midwives providing rights-based sexual and reproductive health services and enhancing access to, and use of, these services.

Project: Broadcasting for Change: Engaging Young Women Through Media

Partner: BBC Media Action

Funding: $1,500,000 (2025-2026 to 2026-2027)

This phase of the project aims to expand efforts to raise the public’s awareness and shift their attitudes on women’s rights issues and gender equality, which will be done through radio programs, social media and live community events in Tanzania.
