Liverpool recovered from a sluggish start as they came from behind to beat Southampton on Saturday.

William Smallbone stunned Anfield in first-half added time when he capitalised on errors by Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker to score the first goal of his Premier League career.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot was visibly unimpressed by his team and reacted by making a triple change at half-time as Harvey Elliott, Andy Robertson and Alexis Mac Allister replaced Curtis Jones, Kostas Tsimikas and Dominik Szoboszlai.

It then took the Reds less than six minutes to draw level in the second half as Darwin Nunez ended his 10-game scoring drought.

The turnaround was complete before the hour mark when Mo Salah converted a penalty kick given for a Smallbone foul on Nunez.

Salah scored another penalty goal late on after a VAR review found Yukinari Sugawara guilty of handball.

Saturday's result left Southampton rock bottom of the Premier League with just nine points from 28 games.

At the other end, it saw Liverpool move 16 points clear of Arsenal in the title race, although the Gunners have now played two games fewer than their runaway rivals.
