Among the top prospects in the class of 2027 is Argyle (TX) five-star safety Cooper Witten.
Ranked a five-star, the No. 24 player nationally, and the No. 1 safety in the composite 2027 rankings, Witten is the son of former Tennessee and Dallas Cowboys star tight end Jason Witten. And as they have been consistently in the Marcus Freeman era, the Fighting Irish are working hard to win the talents of the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder.
Witten does not yet have a Notre Dame offer, but he is among the most anticipated candidates to receive one on Pot of Gold Day, one week from Monday. Less than one week later, on March 22, he will be on campus for an unofficial visit.
Most recently, Notre Dame linebackers coach Max Bullough and director of recruiting Carter Auman hit Witten's school for a visit in late January, however, the Irish have been involved here and making inroads for some time.
Among Witten's 19 current offers, a list that is expected to grow substantially this offseason, are Auburn, LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and USC.

The schools standing out early in this race, per Collin Kennedy back on February 17, are Baylor, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, but others are vying to enter the process. Kennedy's report notes that Witten "wants to visit his contenders several times before coming close to a decision," so additional visits to Notre Dame (and others) this offseason remain a distinct possibility.
Father Jason Witten, listed at 6-foot-6, 263 pounds, was an All-SEC honoree at Tennessee before an 11-time Pro-Bowl Career with the Dallas Cowboys. He was awarded the NFL's highest honor for character, the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, in 2012. He is the current head football coach at Liberty Christian.
Witten's brother, CJ Witten, signed with Rice as a three-star linebacker in the class of 2025. He is set to enroll in June, per the Rice website.
In 23 games as a starter over the previous two seasons, Witten has tallied 127 tackles, four for a loss, one sack, seven interceptions, 14 passes defended, and three forced fumbles on defense. On offense, he's snagged 17 receptions for 313 yards (18.4 yards per reception) and seven touchdowns, all last fall. He has also added a blocked punt and three blocked field goals on special teams.
