Cycling legend Sir Bradley Wiggins believes Manchester United should focus on avoiding relegation from the Premier League this season.

Wiggins, 44, who is known to be a fan of Premier League rivals Liverpool, has recently laughed at claims United are bidding to win their next top-flight title by 2028.

In a recent interview with the Telegraph, the three-time Olympic gold medallist slammed INEOS boss Sir Dave Brailsford, especially given their past back-and-forth comments.

Wiggins famously fell out with Brailsford in the aftermath of the 'jiffy bag' scandal which tarnished his and Team Sky's achievements, as well as the disclosure that Wiggins had obtained permission to use a prohibited drug for therapeutic purposes.

“I’m not a fan of Dave Brailsford,” he told the publication. “I couldn’t even sit here and say, ‘I don’t like him, but I respect what he has done.’ I really haven’t got a lot of time for him, to be honest. “Mission 21?” he scoffed. “More like Mission Championship.”

INEOS chiefs have slashed bonuses, company credit cards and staff so far at Old Trafford, intending to reduce costs in a bid to increase 'marginal gains'.

Wiggins has in the past also criticised Brailsford for his successes with British cycling, insisting his methods were not all they were hyped up to be.

"A lot of people made a lot of money out of it, and David Brailsford used it constantly as his calling card, but I always thought it was a load of rubbish," ITV relayed back in 2017.

"It's a bit like the whole chimp thing. At the end of the day, chimp theories and marginal gains and all these buzzwords - a lot of the time, I just think you have got to get the fundamentals right: go ride your bike, put the work in, and you're either good or you're not good.

"Sometimes in life or in sport, whatever, you're either good at something or you're not. That's what makes you a better athlete: your physical ability and whether you've trained enough - not whether you've slept on a certain pillow or mattress."
