Barcelona vs Osasuna postponed minutes before kick-off after death of medical staff

Barcelona’s game against Osasuna has been postponed just minutes before kick off after the tragic death of a member of Barcelona’s staff.

The La Liga clash at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys was scheduled to kick off at 8:00pm GMT, but just minutes before kick-off, Barcelona released a statement announcing the game had been called off.

Barcelona confirmed that first-team doctor Carles Minarro Garcia had passed away in a statement on social media.

The statement read: "FC Barcelona is deeply saddened to announce the passing of first-team doctor Carles Minarro Garcia this evening.

"For this reason, the match between FC Barcelona and CA Osasuna has been postponed to a later date.

"The FC Barcelona board of directors and all staff extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time."

Osasuna also released a statement sending their condolences to Garcia’s family.

It read: "Club Atletico Osasuna wishes to convey its deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Carles Minarro Garcia and would like to send a warm hug to all the staff of FC Barcelona, as well as to its fans, at this difficult time. May he rest in peace. Goian bego."

LaLiga also confirmed that the game would be suspended and a new date would be scheduled.

A statement read: "LaLiga regrets the passing of Dr. Carles Miñarro, FC Barcelona’s first-team doctor, and announces that, for this reason, today's match between FC Barcelona and Osasuna has been postponed, pending the decision of the single judge of Competitions.

"LaLiga would like to express its deepest condolences to his family, friends, the club, and its supporters, and shares in their sorrow. The new date and time for the match will be announced soon."

Barcelona had already announced the team sheet with Hansi Flick’s side looking to pick up three crucial points in the title race. The Catalans are currently one point ahead of 2nd place Atletico Madrid and three points in front of 3rd place Real Madrid.

Real are in action tomorrow against Rayo Vallecano at the Santiago Bernabeu, while Atleti travel to Getafe. Barcelona are set to be in action on Tuesday when they host Benfica in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16, Barca hold a 1-0 aggregate lead from the first leg.
