Mohamed Salah posted his traditional post-match selfie with the Liverpool goalscorer following their 3-1 win over Southampton - and this time it was Darwin Nunez who featured.

Arne Slot's side had to battle hard to beat Saints at Anfield on Saturday afternoon. After a disappointing start, the Reds fell behind just before half-time as Will Smallbone fired home from inside the box.

However, Liverpool were much improved in the second period and provided the perfect response, equalising in the 51st minute through Nunez. They then turned the game on its head three minutes later, as Mohamed Salah stepped up from the penalty spot to put the Reds in front.

It felt as though Liverpool were going to run away comfortable winners from this point, but that didn't prove the case. Southampton looked a threat in attack and had chances to equalise themselves, with Cameron Archer going close as he forced Alisson into a smart save.

But Liverpool wrapped up the three points in the 88th minute, as Salah scored his second from the spot to seal a 3-1 success. It's a win that moves the Reds 16 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, though they have played two games more than second-place Arsenal.

After the game, as he always does, Salah posted a selfie with a Liverpool goalscorer on social media. As Nunez found the back of the net, he was part of Salah's image that delighted the Reds fans.

Nunez endured a mixed afternoon on Merseyside. He escaped a red card in the first half for a late challenge on Kyle Walker-Peters. The Uruguayan was booked for the tackle, only for VAR to take a closer look at the incident for serious foul play. However, the technology decided to stick with the initial decision and Nunez stayed on.

And then after scoring in the second half, Nunez decided to shush the Southampton fans after signing "you're a s*** Andy Carroll" throughout the first period. He won the penalty for Salah's first and overall enjoyed a sweet ending after a difficult start and just weeks after Arne Slot criticised his work-rate.

Speaking on Nunez in his post-match press conference, Slot said: "That's also the life of a No.9 – you go from missing a chance to scoring an important goal to then, all of a sudden, missing a chance again. But I think today, especially in the second half, you also saw the work-rate he can bring to the team. But the main thing that happened was in the second half we started to play in a different tempo – not only without the ball but also with the ball.

"The first goal, if you look at Lucho [Luis Diaz], how he takes that one-v-one on, I don't think I can select a clip where that happened in the first half. In the second goal, Ryan Gravenberch pushed up all the way at the 18-yard line to win that ball which led to the foul on Darwin, whereas in the first half every ball that fell out they could just pick up the ball and start to play. The energy in the stadium for the players and the fans in the second half was completely different than the first half."
