The latest transfer updates as Man Utd scour the market for a striker

Canada’s all-time leading goalscorer Jonathan David is expected to be at the centre of a huge transfer tug of war in the summer as the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle United all express an interest in signing the striker.

David has scored a phenomenal 21 goals in 38 games for Lille this season and has been a standout performer in the Champions League with six goals in nine matches, including crucial winning strikes against Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and an equalising goal against Juventus to help his team to the knockout stages of the competition.

The rapid 25-year-old forward has consistently been one of the most reliable goalscorers in French football for half a decade but is expected to leave Lille in the summer on a free transfer at the end of his contract.

David is understood to be keen on a new challenge in a top European team and has previously hinted at his desire to play in the Premier League as he looks forward to a new challenge in the run-up to the 2026 World Cup on home soil.

Jonathan David expresses desire to play in England

Caught Offside understands that Jonathan David is keen to take his time before deciding his next destination but does claim that the forward is leaning towards a top Premier League move.

Earlier this campaign, he told French outlet Onze Mondial: “Yes, I will be free at the end of the season. And as for my future, I hope to grow, to become a better player, and to play for the biggest clubs in the world, if I can.

“But first of all, I just want to have fun, never forget that football is fun. I started playing football because I had fun. And even though it has now become my job, you have to remember that I wake up every morning for football, for the pleasure of playing.”

While in the Athletic, he told the outlet over the summer: “I’m open to anything.” David added. “I think obviously the Premier League is regarded as one of the best leagues in the world.”

David’s contract situation could hand Manchester United a golden opportunity to sign the striker on a free transfer this summer although Amorim may find himself in a situation where he needs to convince the player of the long-term project due to the increasing likelihood that there will be no football on the continent next season.

26-time international makes transfer feelings known

Long-term Manchester United striker target Viktor Gyokeres has signalled his desire to leave Sporting Lisbon this summer, according to reports from Mail Sport, via Portuguese outlet Record. The Swedish international was a pivotal part of Ruben Amorim’s title-winning team in Lisbon last season and was the top scorer in Portuguese football with a staggering 43 goals in 50 games across all competitions last term.

However, the 26-time international has taken his game to new heights this term with a stunning 37 goals in 39 matches including six in the Champions League with his most notable moment being a hat-trick in a 4-1 demolition of English champions Manchester City.

Amorim brought the 26-year-old to Portugal after being impressed with his form at Coventry City and played a huge role in moulding him into one of the most lethal strikers in world football. The 40-year-old remains a huge fan of Gyokeres but faces a challenge to meet the player’s price tags amid United’s current financial difficulties which will likely only be amplified by a failure to secure European football.

Gyokeres has an £85million release clause in his Sporting contract, but reports earlier this year claimed Sporting may allow the forward to leave for around £68.5m, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Barcelona also showing interest.
