When Rui Hachimura returns, Dorian Finney-Smith figures to move back to the bench. However, it's possible that Hachimura will assume the sixth-man role. Regardless, Hachimura, Finney-Smith, and Vanderbilt will likely receive most of the minutes at the four and five during the Lakers' postseason run.
Meanwhile, Lakers guard Dalton Knecht could see some time at the four (not an ideal situation, but one that could be necessary against certain lineups), but the rookie would likely be targeted defensively and would put the Lakers at a significant size disadvantage against bigger teams. In the limited minutes Knecht does see, James could slide to power forward or center during critical playoff stretches.
The ongoing integration of Dončić alongside LeBron has exceeded even the most optimistic of expectations. Now, with role players like Goodwin and Jemison stepping up, the Lakers appear to have the depth necessary for a deep playoff run. How Redick ultimately configures his rotation could be the difference between an early exit and the franchise's 18th championship banner.
Another option for the Lakers would be to activate Kleber. If the 33-year-old German big man is healthy enough, he'd bring experience and the ability to space the floor with his shooting. He's also a physical defender with an excellent ability to protect the rim.
It's also possible that Alex Len will ultimately work his way back into Redick's good graces, while Morris will be available in emergencies.
The Lakers' decision on Jemison's contract status will likely be determined by his continued contributions over the final stretch of regular-season play. While he's shown potential as a valuable backup center, the Lakers crowded (yet fairly underpowered) frontcourt rotation, coupled Hachimura's imminent return, could complicate his path to a standard deal. Still, for a player who was once an undrafted rookie (who really began the season as an afterthought), Jemison has already exceeded expectations. Whether he makes the playoff roster or not, his development represents another win for a Lakers front office that has successfully rebuilt their depth on the fly during this remarkable midseason surge.
